Overview1

(Brief Description / Abstract) :

Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar has completed his graduate degree in 1986  from Regional Engineering College (Presently NIT), Durgapur in Metallurgical Engineering and then obtained a Ph.D. degree from the Department of  Metallurgy,   Indian  Institute of Science,  Bangalore in  1995. He was a Post Doctoral fellow and subsequently worked as a Research Scientist at the Technical University of Clausthal, Germany, before joining as a Scientist at Defence Metallurgical Research laboratory, Hyderabad, in 2001. Dr. Majumdar has recently been deputed as Scientist' G' at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, where, in addition to his research activities, he has started teaching and guiding postgraduate and Ph.D. students.
Dr. Majumdar has focused his research and development activities on metallic glasses and nanomaterials within the framework of expertise in rapid solidification. He is instrumental in conceptualizing, planning, and then materializing new and innovative ideas for various defence needs. At DMRL, he has been spearheading two research projects, namely 1) development of dual-phase ultra-soft magnetic alloys consisting of the nano-embedded amorphous matrix, which are used for precision control of energy supply resulting in substantial weight reduction in missiles or allied defence systems, and 2) development of futuristic W alloys, made of Nano-Tungsten Heavy Alloy (N-WHA)/Tungsten-Bulk Metallic Glass (W-BMG) composite rods with enhanced Depth of Penetration (DoP) of KE penetrators. He has developed process flow sheets for producing 1) continuous and defect-free amorphous ribbons of 35±5 mm thickness and 15±5 m length with a surface roughness of 1.2±0.5 mm with the soft magnetic properties equivalent to the internationally reported values and 2) rods of W+BMG with a density equivalent to conventional Tungsten heavy alloy (WHA). These rods' penetration capabilities show a 30% enhanced penetration depth compared to that of traditional WHA.
Apart from being involved in technology/materials development programs at DMRL, he has also published several original research studies in different peer-reviewed journals. He also has two Indian patents and one technology document submitted to DIITM, DRDO, in his credit. Dr. Majumdar has also guided several Ph.D. and M.Tech students as a co-supervisor in collaboration with India's premier academic institutes during his tenure at DMRL.

Research Domains:

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium structural synthesis: casting, directional solidification, rapid solidification, mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering; Amorphous and nano embedded matrix: Ultra-soft magnetic materials, composites for defence applications.

Specific Projects:

As an Individual:

  • Indigenously designed and fabricated a Planar Flow Melt Spinning Unit of 1 kg capacity. Some unique capabilities, which are not available in other existing equipments, have been implemented successfully in the present facility

As a Team Leader: (Project DMR276), PDC- Oct 2004 to Oct 2009 (Rs. 14.5 Cr):

  • Development of Nanostructured ultra soft magnetic materials”. Aim to demonstrate the technology of producing nano-soft magnetic alloys. The major accomplishment is to demonstrate the reproducibility of making continuous, and defect-free amorphous ribbons of 35±5 m thickness and 15±5 m length with a surface roughness of 1.2±0.5 mm. The soft magnetic properties of these ribbons after nanocrystallization are on par with those of the state of art alloys reported

  • Three types of nanostructured ultra soft magnetic alloy systems, namely FINEMET, NANOPERM, and HITPERM, have been developed; a huge database has been created to establish composition-process parameter-structure-magnetic property correlations in all individual system. It has been shown that the evolution of microstructure and corresponding soft magnetic properties of these alloy systems concerning the variation of compositions and processing conditions is different.

As a Project Leader: (Project DIR-2), PDC- Jan 2015 to May 2018 (Rs. 3.85 Cr):

  • Advanced W alloys for Kinetic Energy penetrators: Aim to develop Nano-W Heavy Alloy (WHA)/W-bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite rods with enhanced Depth of Penetration (DoP) of KE penetrators. The major achievement is to innovative development of a process flow sheet for producing nano-tungsten heavy alloy compacts of near theoretical density, consisting of core-shell structure of nano-W, engulfed in the 10%Ni-Fe matrix.

  • In the case of producing W-Bulk metallic glass composite compacts, we have implemented a novel method where the BMG powders, mixed with 72 vol% of W have been sintered. Sintered compacts consisting of a network structure of BMG matrix and density of 99.6% have successfully been achieved.
